More than 300 people turned out in support of the local non-profit organization Children Today's first 5K run and walk Saturday morning, Oct. 10 at the PCC, which was able to raise between $30,000-$40,000.Children Today fiscal and office manager Janice Toppen said, "We're really excited about the turnout. We didn't expect this many people to show up."

The event, sponsored by Free Conference Call.com, was marketed to several campuses and organizations including Cal State Long Beach and VolunTeens of Long Beach.

LBCC student Leandre Davison said, "I used to be in the [student] senate and when I heard about the event I asked around for more information. I came in at 32 minutes, which isn't that bad, I guess."

Children Today marketing and public relations manager Miles Nevin was also on hand to cheer runners and walkers along with their friends and families.

It is estimated that between $30,000-$40,000 was raised. The proceeds benefited the organization, which serves homeless Long Beach children ages 6 weeks to 6 years and their families with necessary care and services.

Nevin said, "Our philosophy is that while we care for the children, Their parents are out looking for a job. We provide curriculum material, basic services and food for the children and families, two hot meals and a snack every day."

Erika Lowenthal, Cal State Long Beach student and wife of Children Today president Josh Lowenthal, came in first place for the women with 21:15. She said, "I'm really involved with the organization and I love helping the kids."

Glennis Seldon of Long Beach, who is training for the Olympics, teamed up with Lowenthal and came in second place with 21:42. "I've been running for eight years but I took the last three years off. But now I'm coming back through this event," she said.

Seldon's mother, Theresa Miller, also participated. Miller said, "I came in at 35 minutes and I'm 48 years old and I'm proud. And I'm proud of my age."

Megan Ott of Costa Mesa was third place with 21:53.

Chuck Weissman of San Pedro came in first for the men with 18:52, Marcio Kleemann of Torrance was second with 18:57 and Mark Bixby of Long Beach was third with 19:30.

The PCC's annual Reggae Fest followed the event.
