The Long Beach City College football Homecoming Game against the Chaffey Panthers was a wild one on a windy Saturday afternoon at Veteran's Stadium in front of almost 1,000 in attendance.The game started off slow, then Chaffey dominated for 3 quarters, then the Vikings rallied furiously, but in the end Chaffey would find a way to emerge victorious 35-30 over the Vikings.
The first quarter was scoreless, but David Covey would break the tie with a 29 yard field goal to make it 3-0.
Then the Panthers would score 3 straight touchdowns, led by a two different running backs and quarterbacks to make it 21-3 with 12 minutes left in the 3rd.
Then the Vikings led by Gabriel Thomas, rallied the Vikings with back to back touchdowns, a deep pass to Travon Payne, who broke several tackles and scored from 84 yards.
The following drive, Thomas started the 4th quarter with a 3 yard run but the extra point attempt was blocked and it was 21-16 Chaffey.
On the ensuing kickoff, the Panthers were stripped of the ball by Eddie DeNava, and Kendell Miles picked up the fumble and returned it 35 yards for a score, but the 2 point conversion attempt was no good, but the Vikings would lead 24-21.
Later in the fourth the Panther quarterback Jeff Ginolfi found Tyrone Brantly from 16 yards to give Chaffey the 28-24 lead.
With less than 5 minutes left, on 4th down, Thomas found Willie Bobbitt on a deep route for a 21-yard score, but the extra point by Covey bounced off the goal post to make it 30-28
After converting on a fourth down of their own, Ginolfi connected with Brandon Caldwell with 30 seconds left to make it 35-30, the Vikings marched down field, but the pass to the endzone was deflected and the game ended.
"We're gonna have come out prepared to win and do what we have to do to win this game..all we have to do is play our game and we'll be fine" Thomas Said of the up coming season Finale.
The Vikings will wrap up their season against the Fighting Owls of Citrus @ Citrus. Kickoff is at 1 PM
