Senate honors club leaders

The student leadership awards reception honored outstanding student leaders from clubs, Tuesday, Dec 6, in the LAC Nordic Lounge.

Brett Bruhanski, Kappa president, gave an opening speech welcoming guests. Kimberly Thompson, ASB president, announced the speakers who would present the awards.

Debra Peterson, sankofa coordinator counselor presented the Student Star awards to Clara Cordeiro, Freddie Barrios Lopez, Irving Medina, Erik Neyman, Kimberly Thomsen, Karen Villalobos, and Reginald Vincent.

Club awards were also presented to student organizations, in a variety of categories that included newest club, most active club, best community service, best fundraiser, and best cultural event. Recipients of the club awards were KLBC Radio Association, Latin Dance club, sankofa scholars club and the Coalition for Latino Advancement.

Lisi Baker was honored as the best club member and Rosio Mendoza was named the best club adviser.

Later in the event, Thomsen began the installation of the student senate officers, which included seven newly elected members.

 President Lisi Baker, Vice President Marco Valencia, Secretary Rosny Hang, Cultural Affairs Chair Ysela Damian, Vice-Chair Leonardo Ortiz, Chair-Secretary Joleen Price and Treasurer Debbie Ugarte were installed.

Reginald Vincent, a recipient of the Student Star award, said, "I'm overjoyed that I received an award and I'll continue my service to the community."

Nester Torres, a student who received several awards including the Honors Award, said, "I don't serve the community to win awards, but it still feels great to be recognized and see my peers be recognized as well."
