Mission Viejo- An offensive showcase was on display in Mission on Saturday, Oct. 18, as the Vikings (3-3, 0-2) lost to a potent Saddleback College (5-2, 3-0), 63-44.

Running back Darren Tubbs opened up the scoring in the first quarter for the Vikings with a 6-yard touchdown run.

LBCC seemed to be in control after a failed fourth down attempt left the ball in Gauchos territory, but the next play from scrimmage, Vikes quarterback Josh Powell's pass was intercepted by Saddleback safety Cameron Chadwick and returned 50 yards for a touchdown.

After a Johnny Heinze field goal made it 10-7 in favor of the Vikings, the floodgates opened.

Powell had an efficient game throwing for 321 yards and three touchdowns.

"Our offense finally clicked and we played very well. We just didn't score enough points," Powell said.

Not to be outdone, Gauchos quarterback Brian Shrock dazzled fans with a potent aerial assault that netted 355 yards and six touchdowns on 23-26 passing.

The six touchdowns were split between two receivers, Nick Hutter and Jay Wisner, each catching three.

The Vikings fought hard to come back, at one point being down eleven after Viking defensive lineman returned a fumble for a touchdown late in the third quarter. Braman also added three sacks.

However, the Saddleback offense had an answer for every Viking score.

LBCC did something this week that did not happen in last week's contest against Grossmont; they fought for 60 minutes and the effort did not go unnoticed.

"Our guys fought hard the entire game and I am proud of them for that. We did better than last week, that's for sure," Vikings coach Mike Reisbig said.

In commenting on the week ahead, Reisbig said, "The mindset has to be to get better. In comparing these last two weeks, it has been like night and day. Improvement is definitely being shown."

Wide receiver Stephen Burton had a solid game after missing last week's game. Burton had 153 yards on six catches, one going for a touchdown.

The Vikings will attempt to stop its two-game losing streak Saturday, Oct. 25 at 1 p.m. when it faces Palomar (5-2, 1-2) on the road.
