It was a long, cold night for the Vikings football team after a 33-7 loss to the Grossmont Griffins at Veteran's Stadium Saturday, Oct. 11, pushing the Vikings' record to 3-2 and 0-1 in conference play.
With a quick start again for the Vikes, they methodically marched the football down the field, 73-yards on nine plays for a 7-0 lead with 10:37 left on the clock.
Unfortunately, that was all the scoring the Viking fans saw as the offense failed to make adjustments to a fast pursuing Griffins defense. Grossmont proceeded to outscore the Vikings 33-0 the rest of the game, outgaining them 270 yards to 144. Even more staggering was the Griffins' 112 yards in the second half to the Vikings 37.
Grossmont, playing without its injured starting quarterback John Soli, due to injury it efficiently used its backups for a 26-point win.
In his first start of the season, Griffins backup quarterback Dan Lewis did not feel as though he was pressured to make big plays.
"It wasn't a pretty game, but I went out there and played the way I practiced. I had a good week of preparation and great game plan against a tough, complex 'D'[fense]," Lewis said.
Lewis completed 15 of 35 passes for 143 yards and had one interception.
Lewis also added that once they [Grossmont] made their adjustments, it was easy for his team to move the ball. He called the Griffins offense a grind-it-out-style that punishes their opponents. And grind it out they did as 33 of their 76 offensive plays were runs.
The Vikings defense did a good job holding the No. 7 ranked rushing offense to only 117 yards, but two rushing touchdowns by Grossmont running back Garen Demery (San Diego, CA) gave them the edge they needed to finish off the Vikings.
LBCC had its share of miscues as the Vikings turned the ball over four times.
Vikes quarterback Josh Powell had a tough time operating against a Grossmont defense that seemed to penetrate the LBCC's offensive line at will.
"They ran a tough defense with blitzes that were hard to pick up and I couldn't get comfortable in the pocket," Powell said.
It seemed as though every time Powell dropped back to pass, he was either flushed out or hurried to throw the ball. Powell ended up with 145 yards passing on 16-29 and one touchdown with two interceptions.
Grossmont's Brandon Bogotay arguably had the best night of all the players, kicking four field goals (44, 25, 26, 31 yards) and keeping the dangerous Viking returners at bay with four of his seven kick-offs landing in the end zone. He also missed a 59-yard field goal, which was short by three yards.
The Vikings (3-2, 0-1) now face a tough Saddleback College team that defeated LBCC last year 38-35 in a shoot-out at Veterans Stadium. Game time Saturday, Oct. 18 is 6 p.m. in Mission Viejo.
