The Viking men and women's cross country teams both fared similarly at the Brubaker Invitational at Irvine Regional Park by finishing 12th and 8th respectively on Saturday, Oct. 11.
The men, who finished with a time of 1 hour, 55 minutes and 58 seconds for a 339 score, lost out to San Diego Mesa which won the event in 1:49.39 for a score of 40.
The Vikings were paced by freshmen Leroy Zion and Victor Muro in the four-mile run. Zion finished 71st out of 142 runners in 22:37.30 and Muro 75th in 22:44.05. Teammate Roland Hall finished 81st with a time of 22:48.65. Mesa's Muluken Beressa won the event with a time of 20:17.65.
"We've set our expectations high this year because we feel that you must if you're trying to become successful," said men's cross country coach George Mehale during a recent practice. "We're looking to improve during each event both as individuals and as a team."
Meanwhile, the women's team finished the five-mile run in 1:46.29 for a 199 score, and Orange Coast finished first with 1:35.43 for a 39.
LBCC Freshman Angela Irabba was its top performer, finishing 22nd in 20:00.74. Teammate Carley Lopez was next best with a 43rd place finish in 21:02.76. Crystal Reed of Orange Coast won the event in 18:18.11, beating out the other 106 runners.
The performances by the Viking freshmen didn't surprise sophomore Paulette Cain.
"The upperclassmen have embraced the young runners on our team and it should just make them better," she said. "Last year, the experienced runners did the same with me."
"The team has a very good chance of moving on to the SoCal Regional on Nov. 7 in Bakersfield," said Head Coach Karen Vigilant. "We are in great shape. The one thing we must work on is to be more competitive and leave nothing back."
The men and women's Vikings cross country teams are scheduled to compete in the South Coast Conference Championships at El Camino on Friday, Oct. 31.
