Two goals by Viking midfielder Mayra Carranza helped her team's fortunes as it rallied for a 4-4 tie against Mt. San Antonio on Tuesday, Oct. 6 at the LAC Soccer Field.
Down 2-0 in the first half, the Vikes got on the board in the 41st minute when midfielder Christina Durant garnered one of her three assists when she connected on a free kick to sophomore defender Kaitlynn Estes.
In the 61st minute, the Mounties' Melina Barragan scored, putting them ahead 3-2.
After Mt. SAC went ahead 4-3, Carranza's goal in the 83rd minute tied the game for good.
The win improved the Vikings to 7-4-3 and 1-0-2 in the South Coast Conference and dropped the Mounties to 5-2-3 and 2-0-1.
The Viking's opened up conference play with a ho-hum performance, playing to a 0-0 tie against El Camino on Tuesday, Sept. 30 at the LAC Soccer Field.
In a game that saw both sides struggle on the offensive side of the field, the Vikes and Warriors began the SCC season in a slow paced fashion, by failing to connect on several shot attempts each.
Neither team mounted much of an offensive attack until minute 19 when Carranza smashed a shot toward the goal that was blocked by El Camino's Liz Dominguez.
Head Coach Alex Camargo constantly demanded from the sideline that his players maintain better positions.
"We're having a few issues out there because we're implementing a new system," Camargo said.
"To try to generate more offense, we're shifting toward dropping a forward and playing four at the same time which is a 4-4-2."
During the second half, the game's pace was much of the same, as both teams failed to score.
"We had some chances out there today and Marilyn Montez (goalkeeper) had a really good game," Camargo said. "El Camino is a pretty good team. We're probably both evenly matched."
"We stayed tough and didn't give up," said Viking forward Brooke Ehinger.
The Vikings are scheduled to face L.A. Harbor on Friday, Oct. 10 at 4 p.m. on the road.
