Five commendations and three recommendations were the results the accreditation evaluation team presented to more than 50 LBCC employees, administrators and student leaders during its exit meeting Thursday, Oct. 16 at the LAC.

Dr. Tom Crow, team chair, delivered the compliments and critiques the team gathered during its visit.

Among the team's commendations were the college's ability to persuade voters to approve bond measures in 2002 and 2008, worth more than $600 million; its welcoming atmosphere; the commitment to provide the PCC with increased opportunities; the Long Beach Promise, a partnership between LBCC, Cal State Long Beach and the LBUSD to improve success for high school students; and the college's student success plan.

"The team recommends that the college expands the active participation in the ongoing accreditation process to involve all constituent groups," Crow said. "This should include classified staff and students."

The other recommendations were that the college "establish student learning outcomes for general education and align those outcomes with its general education philosophy," he said. "We immediately recommend the college complete its revision of the review process."

Crow added that LBCC begin implementing the review process and to communicate its findings in a timely manner, to all constituent groups.

"I thought the evaluation team was excellent and fair in the recommendations and commendations they rendered," said LBCC President Eloy Oakley. "There were no major surprises and they got an opportunity to see a lot of good things on campus that we're proud of as an institution."

The 11-member team, which visited the college for three days, took on the job of evaluating the campuses' programs, instructors and student life, among other tasks. The accreditation process takes place every six years for all California Community Colleges. Next, the team will send its findings to the Commission of Quality Assurance and Institutional Improvement and a decision will be presented to the college in January 2009.
