On Tuesday Sept. 30 at 4 p.m., students and faculty were forced to evacuate buildings R, Q, V and W due to a supposed high pressure gas line break at the LAC's South Quad Complex, which is currently under construction. Bond Management Team workers who were on the construction site, were unable to comment about how and why the gas leak occurred.

Center seeks to expand further

PCC provides care for children and looks to add infant program.
As the second anniversary of the Child Development Center (CDC) at the PCC was celebrated on Sep. 25, site supervisor Stacey Smith looked to the future. "We are hoping to open an infant program by January 2009," Smith said. Currently, the CDC is available to all LBCC students and staff, as well as community residents, who have children in need of childcare between the ages of two and five.

An LBCC student, inspirational speaker and ex-felon uses the Women and Men's Resource Center at PCC to encourage others and to advance her academic career. Student assistant Charleen Moore, 48, enrolled in school two years ago after doing six prison terms, now has a GPA of 3.

Benefit offered, not used

LBCC conducted a health fair at the LAC on Oct. 2 that offered blood pressure monitoring, cholesterol tests and booths to sign up to give blood. It also focused on promoting overall health for students. Free care packages with razors, deodorant, and tampons were given away for participating.

In a career that has spanned from sports to business to writing, Mehale's journey has been atypical of many men in his position and who have accomplished as much as he has.

A local business group met on Tuesday, Sept. 23 at Frenchy's Bistro to discuss the future of the Long Beach breakwater, which spans about 2.2 miles and helps protect the Alamitos Peninsula from potential flooding. An offshore breakwater is a man-made structure designed to decrease wave action, ultimately reducing coastal erosion.

LBCC evaluated by accreditation team

Five commendations and three recommendations were the results the accreditation evaluation team presented to more than 50 LBCC employees, administrators and student leaders during its exit meeting Thursday, Oct. 16 at the LAC. Dr. Tom Crow, team chair, delivered the compliments and critiques the team gathered during its visit.

Untapped resource for tough classes

For troublesome and difficult classes, help is available to achieve success. Students may know about the math and reading centers, but there's an untapped resource at LBCC that many students may not be aware of. Supplemental Instruction, or SI, is free additional instruction in a class that meets outside of regular scheduled class hours.
