The Viking women's soccer team opened up conference play with a ho-hum performance, playing to a 0-0 tie against El Camino on Tuesday, Sept. 30 at the LAC Soccer Field.

In a game that saw both sides struggle on the offensive side of the field, the Vikes (6-4-2) and Warriors (5-2-5) began the South Coast Conference season in a slow paced fashion, by failing to connect on several shot attempts each.

Neither team mounted much of an offensive attack until minute 19 when LBCC midfielder Mayra Carranza smashed a shot toward the goal that was blocked by El Camino's Liz Dominguez.

Inconsistent spacing and execution on offense that allowed El Camino several opportunities plagued the Vikings. Head Coach Alex Camargo constantly demanded from the sideline that his players maintain better positions.

"We're having a few issues out there because we're implementing a new system," said Camargo. "To try to generate more offense, we're shifting toward dropping a forward and playing four at the same time which is a 4-4-2."

During the second half, the game's pace was much of the same, but with a few more tense moments as both teams came close to scoring.

Viking sophomore forward Brooke Ehinger was streaking toward Dominguez during the 61st minute, but her shot went wide left of the net.

The Warriors answered back in the 81st minute when midfielder Ashley Martin edged ahead of several Vikings and sent a shot toward goal keeper Marilyn Montez, who made a diving save barely averting a score. Montez finished the game with seven saves.

"We had some chances out there today and Marilyn had a really good game," Camargo said. "El Camino is a pretty good team. We're probably both evenly matched."

Afterward, despite the tie, Ehinger, who had four shots, saw some things on the field that were positive.

"We stayed tough and didn't give up," she said. "Practice tomorrow is where we'll go from here and just keep trying to improve one day at a time."

The Vikings are scheduled to play at Pasadena on Friday, Oct. 3 at 1 p.m.
