With limited days left until the November 4 election, volunteers at LBCC are encouraging students to register to vote before the deadline October 20.
Doris Felix, representative for the Congressional District 37, is one of the many unpaid workers dedicating her time to spreading the word on the importance of the 2008 election and how every vote can make a difference. The non-profit group's slogan is "make it happen."
Felix spent a few days at CSULB, grocery stores, and other shops attempting to get more people registered. She said her best response so far has been at the LAC with over 40 new sign ups.
"This election is sparking more interest than in the past. This has been a great response. Our best ever. These kids are really excited and understand they are a crucial part of this process. It's unbeleiveable," Felix said.
The volunteers are not out to sway voters one way or the other nor to force political agendas upon students.
They believe this is a monumental election that will affect young people and their children extensively in the future.
"We are not here to be aggressive. People just walk up on their own. Sometimes I'll get into discussions with the students if they have questions," Felix said.
They will be back at the LAC on October 7 and 9 to keep signing up new voters and complete change of address cards for currently registered citizens.
"Come back. Be part of the process. It does my heart good to know people want to be a part of history. I can't stress enough how important every vote is to our nation's future," Felix said.
