Coming off a five-game match playoff defeat in the first round against San Diego Mesa in 2007, the Vikings women's volleyball team is set to build on its impressive 18-6 overall record when it opens its season at Rio Hondo, Friday, Aug. 29 at 5 p.m.
"Make it happen" has been adopted as the team's mantra this summer and "getting on the wall," by adding another South Coast Conference title.
The Viking women have nine conference titles, but they haven't held the title since 2000.
Standing in the way is SCC rival and 2007 state champion El Camino, where most of its players are expected to return.
Co-captain Amber Thomas hardly seemed worried: "El Camino is known for (its) volleyball, but we're not going to be easy for them; because we plan to get on the wall this year."
The Viking players plan to use their team chemistry and improved defense to reach its goal of getting on the wall for the first time in eight years.
Co-captain Grace Chang was enthusiastic about the upcoming season. She said, "We all get along great off the court, so it makes it that much easier for all of us on the court."
Third-year head coach Suzie Witmer is very optimistic about her team's chances this year.
She said, "Something that we're excited about is our defense. It's strong this year."
The Vikes, in its first home contest, are scheduled to host Ventura in the LAC Small Gym Tuesday, Sept. 2 at 6 p.m.
Other key dates include a rematch at home against Mesa Wednesday, Oct. 1 at 6 p.m. They open SCC play at East L.A. on Friday, Oct. 3 at 6 p.m.
