Wilmington, CA - A balanced attack and solid defense led the Vikings to its first victory of the season over the L.A. Harbor Seahawks, 44-34 on Saturday, Sept. 6.
During the first half, both teams were able move the ball up and down the field and score. After John Heinze kicked a 33-yard field goal with no time left in the second quarter to give the Vikings the lead, they did not relinquish it.
In a game where both teams totaled 983 yards of total offense, the Vikings showed their muscle on defense when they needed to.
Twice, late in the fourth quarter, the defense had two red zone stands against Harbor that seemingly moved the football up and down the field. One of the red zone stands was a fourth and goal play from the 6-yard line that was batted down for an incomplete pass.
After timely defense, the offense picked up its rhythm. Quarterback Josh Powell threw for 306 yards and a touchdown in a well-balanced offensive attack that churned out 517 yards of total offense.Powell said, "We've been working hard all summer and we had no doubt we could come into this game and leave with a victory. It was a total team effort."
Stephen Burton was as good as advertised. The receiver was a nightmare for defenders.
Burton caught a 73-yard touchdown pass, rushed for two touchdowns and gained 238 total yards receiving, rushing and returning.
Travell Washington added 143 yards and a touchdown on a 78-yard run that all but sealed it for the visiting Vikings.
The Vikings are scheduled to host nationally ranked El Camino Saturday Sept. 13 at 5 p.m. Veterans Stadium.
The Vikings will then travel to Cerritos College where they will face the Falcons on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 7 p.m.
