It has been three years since LBCC has had a winning football program.
This year promises to be different.
New coach, new staff, new playbooks and a new outlook on the culture of the football team should prove to be a recipe for success.
First-year head coach Mike Reisbig inherits a program that struggled and finished 2-7 last year.
It was a dismal year for the program as injuries and sporadic play plagued the team that had promising talent.
Reisbig is hoping that this year will be different. Coach Reisbig is hoping to install within the program an attitude that resembles the LBCC football teams of old that were always picked to be perennial playoff contenders.
This year, the Press-Telegram has picked Reisbig's squad to lose all of its games.
When asked about the bold prediction of the P.T., Reisbig said, "I don't care what they write, it's not telling of what we are going to do. We are going to go out every week and try to be better than before."
He added, "If we do this, we have an awesome chance at making the playoffs."
Getting better will be the mantra for the 2008 Viking squad.
Winning shouldn't be a problem this year. Reisbig hopes to run an in-your-face spread offense that throws the ball around and runs when the defense is lulled to sleep.
Viking Quarterback Josh Powell looks to lead the offense's balanced attack.
Wide receiver Steve Burton will be Powell's No. 1 target, fitting as he also wears the #1.
Burton poses a threat that many teams will not be able to match as he has size and speed on his side.
"We have to play as one, as a team. If we do this we are going to win," Burton adds about the season.
The defense, run by coordinator Mike Maloney, will also have a new look. Moving on from the standard 4-3 defense, the Vikings will line up in a 3-3-5 that has three down lineman, three linebackers and five defensive backs. This type of defense allows the defense to be more aggressive and blitz the opposing quarterback on every play. Brian Braman looks to be the standout on the defensive line.
