'The Rocker' sorta rocks

Issue date: 9/4/08 Section: Opinion
"The Rocker," a comedy film starring Rainn Wilson, is about a 1980s long-haired heavy metal band drummer who gets kicked out of his band, Vesuvius.
Two decades later, Fish (Wilson) gets fired from his office job and moves in with his family. His nephew, Matt Gadman (Josh Gad), asks him to join his rock band called A.D.D., which stands for Attention Deficit Disorder.
After one embarrassing and unsuccessful performance at Matt's high school prom (Fish threw a drumstick at an audience member on accident), Fish surprisingly gets them a record deal after a silly music video is put on YouTube.
Christina Applegate plays Gadman's mother, Kim, who is overprotective of her son, but wants her son to never pass up opportunities, like touring.
The audience in the movie theater seemed embarrassed at certain inappropriate juvenile scenes. Full of rock 'n' roll adventures and silly jokes, this is a pretty average movie for a few good laughs.
My opinion of the movie is that there were some funny moments in it, but the film itself seemed like it wanted to be one of those inspirational rocker films. It is definitely not one of those kinds of movies because the foolish humor overpowered what it truly means to want to be a rock star.
Wilson is a Screen Actors Guild Award winning actor who has starred in "Juno" and "Almost Famous," which is another movie about rock 'n' roll. Gad appeared on the show "Back To You" in 2007. Christina Applegate is an Emmy-award winning actress and is well known for starring in the 1987 show "Married with Children."
This movie is rated PG-13 for nudity and language.
I recommend waiting to see this movie when it's released on DVD.
