The LBCC music department music provides students with the necessary tools to help towards a successful career.

"If you have a goal of becoming a musician and want to create music for the whole world to hear, enrolling in the Protools class is a good place to start," LBCC music student Ray Butler said.

Music Department Chair Dr. Peter Knapp believes that LBCC has some amazing talents among the teaching staff. A few individuals praised for their musical genius are Wayne Brashear, Kevin Kearney, Maurice Love, Dr. Gary Scott and Dr. George Shaw

The teachers have helped many notable talents from LBCC reach their full potential. Sidney Hopson received a scholarship to USC and his brother, Casey Hopson, received a scholarship to Cal State Fullerton. He is currently working on his master's degree.

In addition, Kate Carter, a violinist, transferred to UC Irvine to become the concert mistress and is now at Yale.

Knapp said the music department at LBCC has more than just music. In addition to music programs, LBCC also offers introductions to radio and television.

There are two Internet radio stations operated by LBCC: KLBC in the day and KCTY at night.

There are also R/TV with classes like Intro to Broadcasting and Intro to Media Production, which is a good way to experience cable TV broadcasting, Knapp says.

Knapp said students have two routes here at LBCC for those looking to take music to a professional level: commercial and academic. If that is not your goal and you'd like to get better at guitar or percussion, there are classes for them as well.

The academic program is key for students who wish to transfer into a music program and get their bachelor's degree from another college. The academic program will help to prepare students for testing and auditions and is key to getting in a music program, Knapp said.

The commercial program is for those who would like to learn the engineering side of music. Knapp said if students are interested in learning to become a recording engineer or a producer/songwriter, this is the way to go.

Instructor Nancy Luca says her "school of rock" style guitar class this summer was a fun, music- theory based rock class that is a great way for guitarists of all levels to learn more or just have fun.

" I love teaching guitar," Luca said. She also has an Intro to Recording class that comes highly recommended and will be teaching a protools class in the Fall.

"I'm taking Nancy Luca's Intro to Recording class and I'd recommend it. Also, Charles Gutierrez's Protools is one of the very best here. A lot of people can put a piece together but the more you know the better you can make it," said Butler.
