Long Beach natives, Last Day Standing, entertained students in the Quad, Thursday Aug. 21, as they performed a half-hour set of original music.

The band members, which includes two LBCC students, have been playing together for more than a year and take their roles as musicians very seriously.

Travis Christopherson, drummer and LBCC music major, describes the band's sound as taking a progressive approach to alternative rock.

"Our main goal is to connect people inwardly," Christopherson said.

"I feel that playing on campus is a good way to expose us to new fans and entertain the students between classes."

The band attracted more than one hundred students at different times throughout its set, which provided the members with the opportunity to promote future shows and sell merchandise.

"It's great for us because we can walk around and pass out fliers and meet different people," singer Markus Chavez said.

Students and non-students reacted favorably to the free show.

"I think it's great that we have entertainment here. It's local and it's free. It makes me wish I went to school here," Anna Smith, a campus visitor, said.

After a slow start, the band picked up the pace with a variety of music styles, ranging from pop to Reggae to heavier alternative, showcasing, their devotion to the perfection of its craft.

"I really like the 'Whore' song, but they could've been a little more involved with the crowd," LBCC cheerleader Alexander Vargas said.

The free show was made possible by the LAC Cultural Affairs Council, which welcomes all types of music acts, both local and touring, to perform on campus.

Last Day Standing will be playing at DiPiazza's in Long Beach on Saturday, Sept. 6 at 8 p.m. The show is for all ages.

"The show will be two hours of music starting at 11 p.m. There are some other good bands playing too. For us it is a 'promo' show and we need the support," Christopherson said.

Those interested in ticket information can e-mail the band at Rosen@lastdaystanding.com.

"We are working on a new recording and updating our Myspace page. Check us out. Chowdy," Chavez said.
