Veterans Stadium, LBCC's largest facility adds a new feather to its cap for the upcoming football season.

For a long time there had been talk of a new scoreboard upgrade, but the plans never seemed to line up with the desires.

Finally, after many years, a new scoreboard has been installed and will be fully operational for kick-off against rival El Camino College on Saturday, Sept. 13 at 6 p.m.

Dean of Athletics John Fylpaa said, "It was an old scoreboard that needed to be replaced. I remember it since before 1978, it had old systems, old technologies and it got to a point where we could not find replacement parts."

The biggest upgrade to the scoreboard will be its fully digital capabilities, including different graphics for in-game entertainment. New technology has been developed that allows the scoreboard operator to be present on the field with a remote control.

This upgrade also will feature the most recent addition to all of LBCC athletics, the new college logo.

After many years of sharing the logo, first developed by former LBCC baseball coach Joe Hicks, LBCC is moving on to an "LB" logo that includes the Viking wing in a newer, flashier style.

The Community College District funded the project, which Daktronics, the contractor, took six weeks to complete.

Daktronics Inc. is the world leader in electronic scoreboard installation. It was ranked 24th on the Forbes Magazine list of 200 Best Small Companies in 2007.

The company provided the Olympics with timing mechanisms, large replay screens and result boards.

"Once we found the company, they worked very well and did a great job getting the project up quickly," added Fylpaa.

The athletic department is continually looking to upgrade its facilities while maintaining the history these facilities hold, both for the college and the community.

Fylpaa hopes that the community will be served well by this new addition to a beautiful gem in the city of Long Beach.
