Sophomore student-athletes Sadie Barton and Vannie Prudhomme were honored for their hard work and dedication to their teams when they were named LBCC's first athletes of the year for 2007-2008.
Barton, the Vikings' ace pitcher, set many records from the mound and Prudhomme was nearly unbeatable in the hurdles. This is the first year that the award has been presented and it was voted on by LBCC coaches and members of the surrounding media.
Larry Reisbig, LBCC men's athletic director, said, "They deserved it. I think it's good. It's a good program. It wasn't a clear-cut, easy decision. A lot of athletes were close."
Barton tossed her way to a 21-8 record for the season. She compiled a 1.08 earned run average while striking out 260 batters and only walking 28. She threw three no-hitters. Her 260 strikeouts led the state and set the LBCC single-season record. She had 501 over her career, also a record.
She helped her own cause with her bat, hitting .267 with two home runs. The Vikings lost in the state championships.
Prudhomme took the award on the men's side. He was undefeated for the season in the 110-meter hurdle races. He won back-to-back state titles in the event.
He compiled his best time ever on his way to capturing the 2008 championship, coming in at 13.82 seconds. The state championships were at Cerritos on May 16 and 17.
"He works very hard. He's a fine athlete and a fine student," Reisbig said.
