Named finals women's athlete of the year, freshman sprinter Latonya Estrin along with the 4-by-100-meter relay team will compete in the state championships at Cerritos College on Friday and Saturday, May 16-17 after finishing fifth in the Southern California Championships.

The team consisting of Estrin, Kiana Beard, Sakoya Daley and Cheoma Douglas finished fifth with a time of 49.09. West Los Angeles won the event with a time of 46.42.

"I'm going to go out there, have fun and just do my best. It'll be fun to face tough competition from around the state and see where I stand," Daley said.

The women's team finished with a total of 26 points at the championships. Cerritos won the overall event with 143.5 points.

Along with the relay team, freshman Lauren Taggart advanced to the state championships with her sixth place finish in the 1,500 meters. She finished the event with a time of 5:00.93.

Coach Karen Vigilant said, "The Southern California finals were a good chance for many of our athletes to see what it takes to compete at the highest level when faced with the best competition."
