South Quad to finish in 2009
Students anticipating the completion of the South Quad Complex this Summer may be disappointed to hear that construction has been significantly delayed, possibly through January, said Bill Adams, senior construction manager for the Bond Management Team. Everyone on the team has been close-lipped as far as the nature of the delay, the general opinion being that wooden buildings are complex and tedious, though one thing that has come up from several sources, including team project director Angel Alvarez, is the delay may lead to a lawsuit, but at this time, no one is disclosing any specific information.

Vets gain funds

Veterans are being given an opportunity to receive $10,000 starting for the 2008-09 school year, thanks to an endowment given anonymously to the Veterans' Affairs Office. A total of $100,000 was given to the Veterans' Affairs office and a $10,000 scholarship will be given to an eligible student for the next 10 years.

As the semester comes to an end, hundreds of students were recognized and awarded for their Associated Student Body and Student Senate involvement, volunteer work and leadership skills at ceremonies and receptions. The PCC awards reception started the awards season by including five Crystal Awards and 27 honors certificates to leadership groups.

City magazine makes for a fresh start with a new adviser and editor
From revealing the flourishing nightlife culture of hookah bars in Long Beach to revisiting the historical revolution that was the Civil War, the Spring 2008 City magazine has as much diversity as it does its readers. For its 28th issue, newcomer to the magazine Jean Paik-Schoenberg took the lead as adviser after founder Nancy Redmond's retirement last Spring.

'God of War' author visits LAC

Author Marisa Silver visited the LAC on Tuesday, May 6 in the English Lounge to read an excerpt from her novel "The God Of War" just released April 29 by Simon and Schuster. The event was sponsored by the LBCC Foundation. English teacher Christina Guillen introduced Silver and wanted to bring the author to campus after becoming a fan of her first book and went to one of her signings.

ID thief gets probation

Former LBCC employee Shallan Tunupopo plead guilty to three years of probation at her preliminary hearing Monday, May 5 for felony charges, a Long Beach court official said Monday, May 12. Tunupopo was arrested April 17 for conspiring with Long Beach resident Maria A.

Work study funds cut for Summer jobs

May 31 will mark a temporary end of the federal work study program that will resume in the Fall. The program won't be available to students for the Summer semester because funds won't be available. . To protect funds for the 2008-09 year, the suspension is being implemented.

Child-care fees to increase

A vote to increase child-care fees was approved by the Board of Trustees in a meeting Tuesday, April 22 at the LAC. The increase, which would start this Fall and covers fees through 2011, would cut the budget deficit to $63,000, down from the $675,000 loss the program now faces.

The LAC Reading and Writing center conducted a workshop on "The Skeletons in Your Sentences" in D102 on Tuesday, April 15. The workshop helped students to understand basic sentence structure. Professor Julie Adele led the workshop. The center workshops are free and require no registration and any LBCC student may attend.

Hoping to attract women to jobs that pay $35 an hous, LBCC presented the Women in the Trade job fair Wednesday, April 16. Employers are offering apprenticeship programs so students can earn money as they learn. The programs in PCC's Student Center encourage women to look to non-traditional jobs as a career choice.

Success centers to open in the Fall in streamlined format

Teachers make recommendations for students who lack basic skills.
Starting in the Fall, student learning centers names will be changed to student success centers, with one multidisciplinary center located on each campus. More than 200 LBCC teachers participated in a survey conducted by the Learning and Academic Resource Department to determine what skills students needed.

Crime-fighters win Spirit Award for involvement

For the first time in its 18-year history as a club, the Sigma Pi chapter of the American Criminal Justice Association took home the top honor of Spirit Award at the 71st national conference. "We were elated and overjoyed that we had won the top honor for LBCC," Sigma Pi Chapter adviser and teacher Gregory Slaughter said.

Congresswoman visits

ongresswoman Linda Sanchez visited the LAC and the PCC on Friday, May 9. Sanchez spoke to Mario Cordero's political science class. She attended the vocational awards ceremony at PCC as she learned more about the vocational and career programs. She is serving her third term in the House of Representatives and is the first Latina to be on the Judiciary Committee.

Sun heats up the oven

Lead chef Romain Bertein of the Culinary Arts Department has obtained a cooking device that cooks with solar energy. The Sun Oven uses mirrors to reflect sunlight toward the center and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to heat up. When compared with a regular oven, Bertein said food prepared from the oven tastes better.

Center constructs path to success

The Salvation Army will build a Long Beach Ray and Joan Kroc Community Center at Chittick Field, across the street from LBCC?PCC. The 19-acre facility will be on the corner of Walnut and Pacific Coast Highway, and PCC will be a community partner with the new center.

Board of Trustees members Douglas Otto and Roberto Uranga were sworn back into office Tuesday, May 13 at the swearing-in ceremony at the LAC. The elections code gave an extension of time for the nomination period, but no such nomination was made. Otto and Uranga then faced no competition.

Gala to applaud donors

Gateway scholarship fund providers to be honored
LBCC's Gateway to Greatness program will continue with a gala as part of the college's 80th anniversary Saturday, June 7 at 6 p.m. in the Hall of Champions Gym. The celebration will honor people who have donated to the Gateway scholarship program. The Foundation's goal is to raise $5 million for scholarships for incoming freshmen to attend LBCC for free by 2011.
