Club gives back to needy community

Being involved in beach clean-ups and making Easter baskets for under-served children were just two of the events Kassai members completed this semester.
Kassai, a history society club at LBCC, formed in 1927. It is a club of 25 women who demonstrated academic excellence and served the community and campus.
Kassai also volunteered at the Youth Anti-Violence conference at the PCC.
Club members also volunteered for the Broken Loaf food pantry at a Methodist church in Long Beach. The event was a food bank put together by the church for low-income families.
Kassai volunteered to help load clients' bags of canned food in their cars.
They also organized the Teachers' Appreciation Luncheon that hasn't occurred in more than five years. Kassai decorated the room with panda bears, royal blue and gold flowers and brought Chinese food for the teachers.
Kassai President Uyen Lam is honored to be a part of the club.
"I'm proud of my Kassai family," Lam said. "The women are so enthusiastic and they are the ones who keep me on top of the game. I'm surrounded by diverse and intelligent women."
Kassai sponsor Lynne Misajon, a speech teacher, said, "This has been the most productive semester I've ever had. Our Mona Lisa Project was completed and the women worked hard by repainting and re-sanding the campus benches in the courtyard. Our members participated in the Mini Grand Prix for the first time, which is a great accomplishment."
Kassai had fun participating in the race and learned a lot from the experience. They liked building the go-cart and racing. Kassai members Lam and Keri Austria were princesses for the race.
On the Web Site, orderofkassai.org, Kassai promises to continue to beautify the LBCC campus by painting the benches in the future.
Members attended events such as the Cinco de Mayo celebration and Student Senate luncheon May 6.
Lam said, "Kassai is a growing experience. You learn so much about yourself and others and it's imprinted in your heart."
Kassai is a Chinese word that means friendship and goodwill. The Kassai symbol means unity and loyalty to the group.
