Student and contributor to KLBC.org George Taylor said while eating his free taco on May 5 in the Quad, "The best food is free food." When talking about how he celebrates Cinco de Mayo, Taylor said he already celebrated the occasion with members of KLBC by partaking in margaritas and nachos with his friends.

Friendship and goodwill shared by honor society

Kassai, the women's honor society club at LBCC has accomplished many things this semester. Formed in 1927, it is a club of 25 women who demonstrated academic excellence and served the community and campus. Kassai has been involved in beach clean-ups, have made 15 Easter baskets for under-served children and volunteered at the Youth Anti-Violence conference at the PCC.

"God of War" Author visits LBCC

Author Marisa Silver visited the LAC on Tuesday, May 6 in the English Lounge to read an excerpt from her novel "The God Of War" just released April 29 by Simon and Schuster. The event was sponsored by the LBCC Foundation. English teacher Christina Guillen introduced Silver and wanted to bring the author to campus after becoming a fan of her first book and went to one of her signings.

LBCC task force meets to discuss healthy meals

The student health services coordinator and food service director teamed up with nutrition students on Tuesday, May 6 to discuss a potential program committed to offering more healthy food options for students by Fall 2008. Food service director David Corral said, "We are working on offering healthier menu options in the cafeterias by doing research and getting input from students on what food items they would like to have as a meal option.

Special guest chef Joel Chenet treated Culinary Art students to a fishy cooking demonstration Tuesday, May 13. While Chenet made his preparations, the students first watched the film "Kodiak Salmon Summer" to better familiarize themselves with some of the ingredients to be used.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I feel like it has taken me forever to get through the community college level of what seems to be countless years of education. I'm on the less approved six-year plan. After that, I'm off to my university of choice.

The long and storied histories of LBCC's Associated Men and Women's service programs officially came to an end in May 2006, but that hasn't stopped one student from attempting to revive the dormant organizations. LBCC student Chris O' Brien has been on a one-man crusade for the past several semesters e-mailing administrators business proposals and making current student leaders and club members aware of how influential both organizations were.

Verdad Magazine threw a party to celebrate the release of the 4th volume of its online collection of fiction, poems and artwork in LAC's P110 on Thursday, April 24. Students wishing to read entries or contact the magazine may find information at verdadmagazine.

Winners are honored

Teachers, friends and family members at the Jacaranda awards ceremony congratulated essay-contest winners and honorable mentions of expository, persuasive and literature essays Thursday, May 8 in the English Lounge at the LAC. Teacher Anthony Starros hosted the ceremony and presented the awards.
