Viking boxer becomes national champ

LBCC's Dorian Anthony captured the men's national boxing championship Friday, March14. He is working towards the 2012 Olympic Games. In the 178-pound range, Anthony fought as a light heavyweight. Anthony was victorious in all of his bouts in Colorado.

Vikings shortstop Rose Vargas' walk-off double broke the stalemate with the L.A. Mission Eagles earning her team a 2-1 victory in the Southern California Regional Playoffs Saturday, May 3 at the LAC Softball Field. Largely a pitchers dual for most of the contest, the Vikings' portion of the seventh inning was helped along by a few lucky bounces courtesy of the Eagles' gloves. The Vikes got off to a quick start in the inning when designated player Majella Friel, fell behind in the count 0-2, before she recovered and was walked. Next, after Jessica Amador flied out to center, Raelene Saldana blasted a pitch up the middle that was deflected off Eagles reliever Alyson Salas' glove allowing Friel to reach second and Saldana first base, as the ball slowly rolled toward third base.

Softball playoffs begin

After missing the dance in 2007, the Vikes return as a No. 4 seed.
The LBCC softball team will host a first round Southern California regional playoff matchup against L.A. Mission on Saturday, May 3 at 2 p.m. The first round is a best-of-three series. The Vikings ended the regular season with an overall record of 28-12-1.

Playoffs take center court

In a rematch of last year's state final, LBCC's men's volleyball team will face Irvine Valley in the state semifinal, tonight at 8 p.m. at Irvine Valley's home gym. In its prior match, the Vikes defeated Palomar, 30-23, 30-26, 28-30 and 30-28. The win improved the Vikings' record to 14-4 overall and Irvine Valley is 16-2.

LBCC freshman Courtney Petero won the South Coast Conference tennis championship to keep her No. 1 seed at the LAC tennis center Friday, April 18. Petero played with high intensity through the tournament, losing only 6 sets of the 54 she played. In women's doubles, Petero and freshman, Kim Stern took the championship when they defeated Cerrito's Annika You and Sonia Gutierrez, 6-3, 6-0.
