Nine students were notified and told they won the Viking Award on Tuesday, April 29 in Dean of Student Affairs Byron Breland's office in the E Building.

Breland said the students were awarded for academic achievement and strong leadership skills.

The winners are David Barrera, Monica Conde, Roy "Butch" De La Cruz, Chansophoe "Chan" Din, David Galves, Uyem Lam, Jennifer Lontajo, Dorothy Pitts and Reijo Rantamaula.

Secretary Beverly Norberg informed the students about when and where to show up. She enticed them with a "notation" that was being placed on their transcripts.

After waiting a few minutes on the couches outside Breland's office, sighs of relief could be heard among the nervous students when they were notified of their accomplishment.

Rantamaula, Associated Student Body student trustee and Alpha Gamma Sigma Kappa member said, "I thought I was in trouble." Breland said he was privileged to issue the congratulations and said, "We got to pull their heart strings."

De La Cruz, PCC club board member and a previous recipient of honors certificates and the Crystal Award, said, "When you do things with your heart, you don't really expect anything in return."
