For the first time in its 18-year history as a club, the Sigma Pi chapter of the American Criminal Justice Association took home the top honor of Spirit Award at the 71st national conference.

"We were elated and overjoyed that we had won the top honor for LBCC," Sigma Pi Chapter adviser and teacher Gregory Slaughter said.

The conference in Kansas City April 6-11 offered clubs and its members the opportunity to win awards for crime scene competitions, written examinations covering topics such as corrections, juvenile law, organization history, criminal procedure and police management, physical agility competitions, firearms competitions and talent competitions.

The Spirit Award is given to the top nationwide chapter from more than 233 chapters in the U.S. and criteria is based on conference involvement, enthusiasm, volunteerism and conference support.

Other top awards given were overall top individual firearms shooter and overall top individual academic winner.

Sigma Pi sergeant at arms Fernando Chavez was also awarded an individual first place trophy for a karate demonstration performance for the talent competition. His performance was widely recognized across the board and created a new talent category.

Chavez said, "I wanted to do it for LBCC and to represent and show off my skills."

The club is comprised of 10 members and headed by Slaughter, vice president Antoinette Mitchell and past club president and Sigma Pi historian Leeann Diaz.

Through fundraising, food sales, car washes and working with sponsors primarily last summer and throughout the year, the club was able to raise $7,000 to attend the regional and national conference.

"I was not really shocked. From 7 a.m. to midnight, we were with our board and interacting with people through workshops and events. We were satisfied that our hard work and commitment to stay optimistic paid off," Chavez said.

Sigma Pi chapter was founded in 1990 by LBCC teacher Scott Brown, who works in law enforcement.

The names LBCC and the Sigma Pi Chapter will be added to the trophy at the national headquarters and a second trophy is on display in the M Building across from room 211.
