The LAC Reading and Writing center conducted a workshop on "The Skeletons in Your Sentences" in D102 on Tuesday, April 15.
The workshop helped students to understand basic sentence structure. Professor Julie Adele led the workshop. The center workshops are free and require no registration and any LBCC student may attend.
Adele taught the students how to correctly structure sentences. She passed out handouts with the five basic sentence structures to students.
Students copied down notes from the whiteboard. Adele explained to the group what a clause is.
International student Hyemi Choi said, "I am an international student and the workshops sometimes teach you what is not always covered in class. I would attend more workshops because it is good to get different teachers' ways of explaining grammar to give students a chance to learn more."
As explained from the handout, a clause is a group of two or more words with a subject and a verb. An independent clause forms a complete sentence that can stand on its own.
A dependent clause is an incomplete sentence that cannot stand on its own. Sentence structure includes independent and dependent clauses.
Adele said, "Just like the skeletons in our bodies, the skeletons in our sentences make them stand up as a complete sentences."
Anyone looking for more information on upcoming grammar workshops may ask the front desk of the Writing and Reading center in D103.
