The 5-month-old LBCC Filmmakers Association sponsored by the film studies program serves as a resource network for students to make films outside class.
The program covers screenwriting, directing, editing and film production.
LBCC film major Gary Alvarez said, "This program is inspirational. It's informative and in-depth considering how long it's been around."
The association was co-founded in Fall of 2006 by former LBCC student Ericka Concha.
Alvarez said, "Through the association, I've met all the crew for 'Muralista,' my new film."
"The film is about a 25-year-old female mural painter in Long Beach whose latest mural keeps getting tagged," Alvarez said. "One night she catches the tagger in the act, ties him up and uses his body as a canvas. It's kind of a comical vigilante justice flick, but at its core, the film is about artists respecting each other's work."
Alvarez and his crew have shot the film in different parts of Long Beach with the help of volunteers.
LBCC student Julie Hernandez said, "I am a painter and it was fun to help out on the project. I think it's great that students get a chance to make and shoot their own films."
The association also sponsors an annual film festival to screen student films.
Alvarez said, "The festival will take place on May 15 at the Black Box Theater on campus. We bring in professional judges and compete for best movie, best screenplay, best director, best editor and best cinematography."
Hernandez said, "After helping in this shoot, I can see how tiring and time-consuming making a film can be. I attended the film festival last year and I will attend this year for sure. I want to see the finished product."
Alvarez said, "We even have popcorn at the film festival just like in the movies. This year's festival should be even better than last year."
The LBCC Filmmakers Association meets every Monday at 5 p.m. in D334.
