It was a rough go for many of the members of LBCC's men's track and field team as they, along with hundreds of athletes from universities and Community Colleges, competed in the Ben Brown Invitational Friday and Saturday March 7-8.

The two-day event, which was held at Cal Sate Fullerton on Friday for field events and Mt. San Antonio on Saturday for running events, was broken up into sections to accommodate the large number of athletes.

During the first day's events, the Vikings failed to place in any of the events.

Head coach John Hall said, "Our stadium isn't equipped to host events such as the steeplechase, pole vault or high jump. We're lagging behind in those events."

Although the Vikings didn't excel as a team, there were individual highlights. The hurdles, a Vikings strong suit so far this season, was an event where they fared well.

Vikings Sophomore Vannie Prudhomme placed first in his section during the 110 meter hurdles in 14.11 seconds, ahead of Oscar Spurlock of USC who finished in 14.30.

Prudhomme's performance didn't surprise Hall, who assessed Prudhomme's early season performance before a recent practice.

"Of all our returners, we're probably most excited about Vannie. If he continues to improve and cut down on his time, he'll have an opportunity to take his talents to Olympic competition."

In the 440 meters, Freshman Ricco McCloud placed second in 57.75 seconds while Cuyamaca's Patrick Brown, lapped the field in 56.07.

Hall said, "When I competed, the hurdles were my favorite event, so we take special pride in that competition. That's why we seem to do so well."

In the 400 meter dash, the Vikes' Keith Lewis finished in 53.05, good enough for second behind Matt Stjernholm of Claremont-Mudd, who finished in 51.04.

The Vikings are scheduled to compete at the Cal State Northridge Invitational on Saturday, March 15.
