Radio teacher Gary Wagner said the LBCC radio program is a great opportunity for students interested in having a career in the radio industry. The program offers hands-on training and relies on student involvement to manage all aspects of a radio station.
"Students learn how to format their own show, make announcements and most important to come across as being more personal with the audience." Wagner said.
Casanova's goal is to complete the radio and television program and then transfer to USC to obtain a bachelor's degree in film and TV production.
"I'm getting the experience and knowledge I need in the real world here at LBCC. In addition to being a DJ, we can also learn and contribute as music director, promotions director, traffic director and news director," Casanova said.
Casanova created the logo and name of the show inspired by the Mexican Loteria or Mexican bingo cards.
"The loteria cards have different musical-themed cards such as 'el musico,' which translates to 'the musician,' or 'el tambor,' 'the drum,' so I came up with 'El Radio,'" Casanova said.
The idea of the show is to create a showcase for Latin alternative music and explore the variety and richness of the genre, he said.
The program also offers its listeners a fresh alternative to the limiting options of commercial radio and a taste of the new alternative Latin music, Casanova said.
"I hope this show helps to bridge the ever narrowing gap between Spanish and English cultures through music," Casanova said.
