Welcome to the "Rest of the story.."

I began writing for the Viking at the beginning of the Fall '07 semester and I have had the opportunity to cover a wide array of topics ranging from sports and arts to campus and even global politics.

Writing the news, however, (especially for print) rarely lends itself to the length, depth, and color I enjoy imparting on anything I write.

Don't get me wrong, I fancy the role of keeping people informed and I have the utmost reverence and regard for the functionality and getting-down-to-brass-tacks aspects of journalism that most, if not all reporters thrive on.

It's just that most of the time I find myself, and my stories, at the mercy of my editors (God bless them) and the printing press.

After all, there's only so much room on a piece of paper. And even if I had all the room in the world, opinions in news stories belong in one place, quotes.

This is one of the reasons I was thrilled at the prospect of starting my own blog.

You see, when I write a story, be it news, opinion, critical review, sports, any story, I am suddenly immersed in the world of that story. The people and places involved, his and her truths, the ins and outs of the topic, the nuances and intricacies of something that someone somewhere cares, oftentimes deeply, about.

And consequentially something that I end up caring, often times, deeply about.

Perhaps a psychologist would call it escape-ism but, be that as it may, the story or stories I am working on become somewhat of an extension of myself.

Of course there are some exceptions and certain stories require less research, interviews and time than others, but for the most part when you read something that comes before or after the words 'by Nicholas Palomino Mendoza,' you can be certain that part of me lies somewhere in between the ink…or pixels.

So there you have the inspiration behind "The Rest of the Story'.
