Megan Maynard, a 19-year-old LBCC student, fell or slipped to her death off the Point Fermin Park cliffs April 6.

Maynard worked as a food runner at La Creperie cafe in Belmont Shore.

Co-worker Kirsten Gibbs said Maynard was a fun-loving person always with a smile and was a hard worker. Much is still unknown of Maynard and what campus and classes she attended at LBCC.

It is known that Maynard was with friends when the accident occurred in San Pedro and alcohol or drugs weren't a factor. She is the third person to plummet off the dangerous cliffs in 2007.

Mario Danelo, a USC football place kicker, fell to his death in the same area in January.

His blood alcohol level was twice the limit that the state allows a person to drive, according to the Long Beach Press-Telegram.

After Maynard's death, the City of Los Angeles wants to implement new safety measures for the cliffs by erecting a higher wall that is lighted at night.

Neighbors who live near the cliffs are angry at the City Council, stating that a wall will take away their ocean views and blight the area.

Presently, a fence is in place and danger signs are posted, but "people just ignore them," a resident said.

The fence can be easily scaled and people slip through. The land around Sunken City, as the area is known, is unstable for anyone to venture out onto the cliffs.

Wow, I knew Megan from junior high and high school. This is so tragic. Rest in peace, Megan. I know this happened a while ago, but you and your family are in my prayers. (Continued…)
