Everyone wins when we talk

Vote to lower fee hikes for childcare was the right decision for all involved
The April 22 decision by the Board of Trustees to increase child-care fees was rendered after months of meetings and discussion between students, teachers and administrators. We believe the conclusion the LBCC trustees arrived at and the methods in which they made their decision for the fees were effective and should serve as a model for other programs at LBCC facing budget difficulties.

Sure, you borrow a pen

Students need to be responsible and bring their own supplies
In the middle of zoning out during lectures and class work, sometimes a parasite nearby will ask if they can "borrow" some type of school supply. By the end of class, there is nothing in sight when I look in the direction the parasite was sitting. There goes one from my 99-cent pack of pens.

'Promise' pact is empty

With the recent announcement of the "Long Beach College Promise," it seems that Long Beach school officials have put together a solid plan to make higher education available to all students, regardless of income, educational or career goals. On the surface, the program sounds like a groundbreaking initiative to give every Long Beach student a chance to learn beyond their K-12 years if they so choose.

Mixture of music genres blends to form solid debut

A satisfying mix of pop-punk, trip-hop and indie-rock with sprinkles of electronica, thrashcore and reggae is what makes a truly refreshing album for newcomer solo artist Santogold. When her first single "Creator" caused a buzz in ABC's hit show "Grey's Anatomy" in 2007, contemporary music fans could be thankful to have discovered an artist who holds the key to many unfamiliar genres of music for people who'd normally choose to stay in their comfort zones.

'Grand Theft' parenthood part IV

With the extinction of common sense, a predictable uproar erupted over the Grand Theft Auto IV console game in its first week of its release. Columnist Katherine Kersten of the Minneapolis-St. Paul Star-Tribune whined that Grand Theft Auto IV turned men into heartless criminals.

Newspapers have to re-invent themselves

The future of the newspaper is probably the most talked about topic in the newsroom today. Some are predicting the end is near for print newspapers. With more of the younger audience relying on the Internet and with newspapers facing declining advertising revenue every year, the future seems bleak.

Shield Law here to defend, not weaken journalists

I can see it now: Little Robby reporter is out covering a breaking news story involving a brawl between a police officer and a student. Upon returning to the newsroom, Robby the reporter is confronted by Sally the Sheriff who demands him to turn over his photos and videos of the breaking event.

Security breach must be addressed

The stealing of 40 employees' personal information from the district's computer system allegedly by an employee is a scary crime that has all of us worried. Shallan Tunupopo, a cashier in the LAC fiscal operations and payroll, and Michelle Hernandez of Long Beach were arrested Thursday, April 17 by the Long Beach Police Department.

Reaching the finish line justifies the work

Sixty units seems like a long road of late-night study groups and 10-page research papers for a good 2-3 years. I'm not going to sugarcoat the vision, because it is absolutely true. With every great accomplishment comes great sacrifice. The sacrifice is always looked at first and usually consumes the mind.
