KCTY Radio Association invites students for massages and soothing sounds on Thursday, Feb 18 at 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in E Building @ LAC. LBCC's accreditation status has been reaffirmed by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges. Student health fairs will be held on Wednesday Feb.25 at the LAC and Wednesday Mar. 3 at the PCC.

Mini cars will race to finish

Pageants, chili cook-off and bands to combine.
The 32nd Annual Mini Grand Prix will be Saturday, April 12 on the LAC front lawn. The event starts with the car show at 10 a.m. with the race starting at 10:45 a.m. Since 1976, the LBCC Mini Grand Prix has brought people together from all around the community for a day of fun, competition and award-winning chili.

Candidates face off

The Associated Student Body elections for Fall 2008 started in front of the LAC's Building E Tuesday, April 22 and Wednesday, April 23 by the student center at PCC. The ASB candidates running are La Tonya Neal and Elsie Nolazco for President, Vincent Jordan and John Kindred for Vice President, Kathryn Brown and Ernesto Perez for student trustee and Shaun Marshall for chief financial officer.

Workers treated fairly
Hoping to attract women to jobs that pay $35 an hous, LBCC presented the Women in the Trade job fair Wednesday, April 16. Employers are offering apprenticeship programs so students can earn money as they learn. The programs in PCC's Student Center encourage women to look to non-traditional jobs as a career choice.

Child-care fees to increase

A vote to increase child-care fees was approved by the Board of Trustees in a meeting Tuesday, April 22 at the LAC. The increase, which would start this Fall and covers fees through 2011, would cut the budget deficit to $63,000, down from the $675,000 loss the program now faces.

Students gain promise with citywide program

Do you have 'Skeletons in Your Sentences' ?

The LAC Reading and Writing center conducted a workshop on "The Skeletons in Your Sentences" in D102 on Tuesday, April 15. The workshop helped students to understand basic sentence structure. Professor Julie Adele led the workshop. The center workshops are free and require no registration and any LBCC student may attend.

Teachers reach tentative deal

A teachers' strike has been temporarily avoided as, after almost 18 months of negotiations, a tentative agreement between the full-time teachers union and the LBCC District was reached Friday, April 4. The agreement, which includes a 5.8 percent salary raise in exchange for a teachers' benefits contribution, will be voted on by 350 union members later in April.

Prayers and blessings spread to appreciate global harmony
A message of healing spiritual balance and global harmony was presented in the Nordic Lounge on Tuesday, April 22. Anthropology teacher Adrian Novotny and guest speaker Chief Marvin Swallow guided the ceremony on Earth Day. Swallow is a part of the Rosebud reservation and used to live in South Dakota.

Budget cuts hit $2 million

Calworks, EOPS, disabled program to suffer 10.9 percent loss.
LBCC is facing a $2.3 million reduction in its budget for 2007-08 and a college official said, "Tough, tough times are ahead for next year." Vice President Anne-Marie Gabel explained the cuts Monday, April 21. The cuts can be attributed to the fact that Orange and Sonoma counties overestimated the amount of property tax revenue that would be generated on behalf on Community College Districts, Gabel said.

Crime-fighters win Spirit Award for involvement

Police students club travels to Kansas City for national contests.
For the first time in its 18-year history as a club, the Sigma Pi chapter of the American Criminal Justice Association took home the top honor of Spirit Award at the 71st national conference. "We were elated and overjoyed that we had won the top honor for LBCC," Sigma Pi Chapter adviser and teacher Gregory Slaughter said.

Students will celebrate the joy of transferring
tudents transferring to a university this Fall or next Spring semester will be honored Wednesday, May 14 for their achievements. The application is available online at transfer.lbcc.edu, where students can simply print it out and submit it to Student Transfer Services coordinator Ruben Page in A156 at the LAC, or Lorraine Blouin in GG100 at the PCC.

Trustees set goals

The LBCC Board of Trustees, President Eloy Oakley and other administrators set goals to enhance the future overall experience during an annual retreat and study session Monday, March 31 and Tuesday, April 1. The retreat began Monday evening with dinner at Ristorante Da Vinci where LBCC administrators and trustees discussed the changing demographic of Long Beach with city Manager Pat West, consultant Jack Humphrey and other members of the Long Beach community.

Journalists take eight in state

City magazine, lbccvikingnews.com and Viking newspaper students earned 15 awards at the Journalism Association of Community Colleges state convention in Los Angeles on Thursday and Friday, April 4 and 5. LBCC? students placed 8th overall in the state. Former magazine editor in chief Kori Filipek said, "I?can't express how proud I am of the magazine staff.
