From Long Beach's Horny Corner to Corona Del Mar's Jump Rock, plenty of places within an hour's drive allow students to catch a mini-vacation and enjoy a relaxing day.
Activities can range from surfing and cliff-diving for people who like an adrenaline rush.
Or they can choose a more relaxing route such as hiking or just trying to catch a few rays from the sun.
The Wedge is one of the deadliest, most beautiful wave spots in Southern California. Visitors may get there by taking the 405 Freeway south to the 55 Freeway south and continuing south until drivers reach the end of the Balboa peninsula in Newport Beach.
"The waves at the Wedge are hollow and when you get pitted, it sounds like a freight train. It's definitely an experts-only wave when it's big and you can tell if you are going to make the wave by the reaction from the crowd," said LBCC student Chris VanderMolen.
Not far from the Wedge is Corona Del Mar's Jump Rock, students may get there by taking Pacific Coast Highway south from the end of the 55 Freeway, making a right on Marguerite Avenue and taking a left at Ocean Boulevard until it dead-ends at Poppy Avenue.
It is the second rock formation in the water as ocean-lovers look off the vista toward the south.
"If you're comfortable with the climb up, it's a great jump and it gives you an adrenaline rush, plus the water is deep," LBCC student Charles Hellingson said.
An amazing hiking experience may be found if students head north to Malibu Creek State Park. It lies 4 miles south of the 101 Freeway on Las Virgenes-Malibu Canyon Road. It is the site where "M.A.S.H." and "Planet of the Apes" were filmed and the home to gorgeous tropical settings off Malibu Creek.
"The place is so beautiful. I'm really glad I found out about it," LBCC student Karen Lynch said as she first saw the main waterfall of Malibu Creek.
For students who don't have the time to take a day trip, a good spot to get a tan is a bend in the beach known as Horny Corner.
It is off 2nd Street and Bayshore Avenue in Long Beach's Belmont Shore and it remains a popular place for beachgoers all Summer long.
Many other locations within an hour are great destinations. For surfing, Trestles in San Clemente and Hagerty's in south Redondo have two of the best wave locations in California.
Thousand Steps in Laguna Beach and Crystal Cove in Newport Beach are great beaches to explore and excellent hiking may be found in the mountains of the San Gabriel River.
For students who can't afford a lavish vacation, the local getaways give the opportunity for students to get out and have a great day while paying for nothing but the cost of gas.
