KLBC radio is a student-run, online radio station where students are given the opportunity to experience hosting and producing their own programs while gaining tools to secure jobs in the industry.

From hip-hop to sports talk to rock and roll, KLBC covers almost every genre of music. The music is DJ'd by students at LBCC in two-to-three-hour blocks between the various talk shows. The station includes a large library of music either brought in by students or submitted by mail. In some cases, music is sent by record companies to the students in hopes of getting on their unofficial play list.

General manager Jason Reed said, "I do a rock/alternative show in addition to my sports show and I actually got a lot of the bands I play from the list of artists nominated for the Orange County Music Awards. Ultimately we have music directors who find music. We have a small, yet growing library in the studio."

Currently, KLBC is under the guidance of teacher Ken Borgers, an experienced radio personality who also airs on KCRW.

"Ken is always willing to help us put together our demo tapes and offer us whatever tips he can to make us better at what we do," Reed said.

No prerequisite is needed to join the radio classes or previous knowledge of the radio business. Although no aa or certificate is offered in the radio program, students say the experience gained prepared them for a job at a "real" radio station.

"I ended up with an internship at AM570, a sports station, off of a tour we took as a class to the eight stations owned by Clear-Channel," Reed said.

In addition to airing regularly, KLBC students participate in many off-campus events.

Weston Komathy, program director, said, "Last semester Jason (Reed) and I broadcasted LBCC Viking baseball on the road. We also tour local high schools and promote the program to future students."

The station was honored with an award from New Music Weekly Magazine for being the No. 1 college station on the West Coast and No. 2 in the country. KLBC was also asked to present the award for best alternative at the 2007 Orange County Music Awards.

The station is primarily online right now but hopes to expand to radio as soon as the tower is put back up to expand the frequency range. As for now, listeners may tune into KLBC.org for show updates, off-campus events, Viking athletics schedules, talk shows and new music.

Reed said, "The goal of the program and station is to let people who enjoy doing this as a hobby do their thing and entertain people. It definitely prepares those who want to make a career out of it as well. We're no. 1 on the West Coast!"
