Teachers, friends and family members at the Jacaranda awards ceremony congratulated essay-contest winners and honorable mentions of expository, persuasive and literature essays Thursday, May 8 in the English Lounge at the LAC.
Teacher Anthony Starros hosted the ceremony and presented the awards. Starros said, "It is very important to recognize students outside the classroom. It keeps them inspired."
Meredyth Warren, English 1 student and winner of the Persuasive Essay, said, "This is a wonderful way to honor class work." Warren said she plans to be a pharmacist. Her essay was titled, "Fatal Drug Advertising: The Lessons of Vioxx" inspired by what she feels is an over-advertisement of new drugs.
The Jacaranda contest is conducted once a year. Students must be enrolled in an English class and obtain the signature of their teacher to submit their essays.
More information is available by contacting Starros at 938-4503 or e-mail astarros@lbcc.edu.
